I believe many people, including some Christians, would agree that somewhere along the line Christianity has lost the plot of what it was meant to be. Where there should be acceptance and compassion, there is only separation, intolerance, and fear. In a system where it is taught that one should frown upon sin but love the sinner and abandon worldly ways in pursuit of a higher Spirit within oneself (Christ), there seems to be an overwhelming amount of discord and animosity amongst followers concerning anyone who doesn't label themselves as part of a particular denomination of Christianity. Surely this is a problem that must be resolved if we are to have any hope at all.
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. (Romans 8:1-7)
But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not being merely human? What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. ... (1 Corinthians 3:1-23)
Almost everyone knows the name Gandhi. He led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world through his doctrine of nonviolent protest to achieve political and social progress.
When asked by a western missionary "Mr. Gandhi, though you quote the words of Christ often, why do you appear to so adamantly reject becoming his follower?"
Gandhi replied, "Oh, I don't reject Christ. I love Christ. It's just that so many of you Christians are so unlike Christ."
For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:5-8)
